Acupuncture: the insertion of very fine needles into your skin a specific locations called acupuncture points in order to help your body reduce inflammation, release pain, calm the mind. Most people say they feel a light pinch followed by relaxation. The needles are sterile and single-use. Acupuncture treats more conditions that you might imagine, and if you’re new to acupuncture please don’t hesitate to ask me what it can treat. Also, please check out the reviews section on this site.
Gua Sha: scraping the skin to release muscle and tendon tightness in order to relieve pain, treat common colds, move lymph and blood. I use a ceramic soup spoon in the clinic.
Cupping: applying cups to your skin with suction. The cups are generally left on for 1-20 minutes, and may be moved around (sliding cupping). The idea is to lift skin and connective tissues and take pressure off your nerves while allowing space for lymph and blood flow. People feel pain relief and freedom of movement.
Chinese Herbal Medicine: Like acupuncture, herbal medicine has a history of more than two thousand years. Historically herbs were dried and then reconstituted and cooked like a medicinal soup. People also made pills by hand. The most popular ways people take modern herbal medicine is by dissolving the herbal powder in a cup of hot water, by taking the herbs in pills or capsules. Chinese herbal medicine is very effective as a daily medicine and is especially useful for treating menstrual problems, insomnia, low energy. Many people try acupuncture for a few visits before we discuss if it would be helpful to add herbal medicine.
How should I prepare before an acupuncture treatment?
Make sure to eat a light meal at least an hour before (yes, breakfast too!) and wear comfortable clothes. I provide half-sheets for draping, and some people bring sweatpants or shorts to change into.
I had a treatment earlier today and now I feel something I didn’t feel before (tired/hungry/sore). Did acupuncture do it? Am I stuck with this feeling?
Your body is doing its best to heal. Healing often requires our bodies to become more dynamic which can feel scary when we have had chronic pain or other symptom for a long period of time. Trust yourself and listen to your body over the next 2-3 days. Listening to your body may involve going to bed early, exercising less strenuously, eating when you’re hungry.
